Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The purpose of this module is to examine, and critically evaluate, the EU as a global actor. The evolution of the Unions Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) will provide the backdrop for a discussion of ways in which the EU (as a "normative power") seeks to transmit influence and values beyond its own borders.

Syllabus:

Historical development of EU external policies Europeanisation as a tool of EU foreign policy Enlargement as a dimension of EU external relations EU relations with the Neighbourhood EU-US relations EU and the Middle East EU and the developing world EU and the Western Balkans EU - Turkey relations EU as a security actor
